I saw these suckers in the Chronicle a while back and after a cursory glance, I decided to go hunting for them at my local Safeway.

A sure sign of the apocalypse. At your local grocery store.

Picked up both the cheddar and the white cheddar iterations. Mild looked weak and I only go hardcore, I left that one behind. Promptly rushed home to see if the flavor was anything like the original.

Kraft seems to be starting the media blitz with these already, sponsoring America’s Got Talent among other things. They also have been airing some ridiculously cheesey commercials, featuring geysers of viscous cheese sauce, making them significantly more nasty than those older animated mac and cheese commercials with the skateboarding dinosaurs and such. Why the hell would I want to take a ride on a gushing mound of liquid cheese?

As for the taste, Kraft did a pretty good job replicating the flavor. I guess it’s not too hard to lyophilize the sauce and coat some crackers with the powder. The aftertaste is distinguishably MSG, but as long it isn’t chicken in a biskit, I’m good. I had a few and had to restrain myself from ruining my dinner. I wish they had a little more girth as the crackers are flatter than their macaroni counterpart, but all in all, tasty stuff.

Nate liked them, but still preferred the old stalwart, Cheez-its (I did observe that the box was noticeably lighter within days and I hadn’t touched the box since the initial taste test, though.. haha). Our friend liked them better than Cheez-its, particularly the white cheddar ones, so the jury’s out on the cheese cracker comparisons. So good reviews all around even though it still weirds me out every time I look at them. You can use them as a conversation starter when people around you give you confused looks.

Next up: LEGO gummys and waffles! Sure to cause some serious confusion for kids who were told to never eat those delicious looking plastic blocks.
